“Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change.” – James 1:17
“with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change” God does not change. This idea must be fully integrated into our understanding of God. There is no variation within His being, and He is incapable of acquiring properties. If He were capable of acquiring or losing any sort of attribute or property then He would be capable of increasing or decreasing in perfection. Moreover, God must be existentially loving and lovable, because if we are commanded to love God, yet He only acquired lovability through His creation then He would have undergone a change. If He had only acquired the ability to be loving by having something from outside of Himself to love, again His love would be a trait acquired through experience which is to say that He is capable of change.
So how was He to express this love before His creation? It is within the trinity that we see the full and perfect manifestation of God’s loveliness and loving nature. The persons of the Godhead existed perfectly and in divine love for one another fully.
It is by this divine love within the trinity that we must understand God’s love for us. Because truly for those who are found in Christ, God does not love them with a love which has been earned by the one who is loved. Rather, since God’s love towards His children is so completely an act of grace and rooted solely in His own nature, when He looks on His children, which are found in Christ, He loves them with that perfect love which has been expressed within the Godhead. I will restate this for further clarity. Since we who were dead in our sins are now made alive in Christ, and since Christ bore our sins and we are now co-heirs and co-laborers with Christ, God’s love for His adopted children is solely rooted in His love for His Son. So as He looks on us, He does not perceive us, but rather He loves us with that perfectly pre-existent and divine love as expressed before the creation and foundation of this world. Since God is perfect, and holy in all that He does His love expressed inwardly, and now towards His children would be so thoroughly perfect that we could not ever understand His affections towards us. And this is a reason to sing.
